Shakira fue condecorada con el premio a la Artista del Año 2011, que otorga la Universidad de Harvard, por haber vendido más de 50 millones de álbumes en todo el mundo.
La intérprete de "Loca" ofreció un breve discurso en el cual exhortó a los estudiantes de dicha institución a emprender más acciones que contribuyan a mejorar la educación de los niños y jóvenes pertenecientes a países que aún están en vías de desarrollo.
"Yo terminé la escuela cuando tenía 15 años y, fuera de tomar un curso de historia en el Verano de 2008 en la Universidad de California, ¡créanme que no he pisado nunca un salón de clases!", dijo frente a los mil 200 asistentes.
Y agregó "Así que hoy que entraba a las instalaciones (de Harvard) tuve que llamarle a mi mamá y decirle: 'Mamá ¿adivina qué?: ¡Entré a Harvard, al menos por un día!", exclamó en tono de broma Shakira.

Por su parte, Allen Counter, director de la Fundación Harvard apuntó "Este premio conmemora tu visita al colegio de Harvard y reconoce contribuciones excepcionales que has hecho a la música latina y popular, causas humanitarias y las relaciones interculturales".
Con este premio, la intérprete se suma a una exclusiva lista de artistas latinoamericanos que han recibido este reconocimiento, como lo son el cubano-estadunidense Andy García, la mexicana Salma Hayek y al haitiano Wyclef Jean.
Después de recibir dicha distinción, la artista criticó las legislaciones en Estados Unidos contra los inmigrantes y dijo que algunos estados han propuesto leyes antiinmigrantes que van en contra de los esfuerzos de su fundación para proporcionar educación a los pobres del mundo.
Asimismo, Shakira señaló que los inmigrantes latinos que enfrentan esas iniciativas tendrán "justicia" cuando crezca la conciencia de la población sobre su situación penosa.
