Department of Neurosurgery research assistant Robert Funk is used to demonstrate the equipment used in hypothermia therapy, the treatment that was used on Tejano musician Emilio Navaira, during a press conference at Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center Wednesday, March 26, 2008. The treatment is used to cool a patient's body temperature down to about 92 degrees for 24 hours then slowly warmed up. This process allows the brain to recover by slowing down the activity of brain cells during the time they are vulnerable to injury.
