Madonna's lawyers in the appeal case, Alan Chinula, left and Modecai Msiska, confer, in the Supreme Court of Malawi in Blantyre, Friday, June 12, 2009. Malawi's highest court ruled Friday that Madonna can adopt a second child from the desperately poor southern African country, citing the pop superstar's love, determination, "and latest income tax returns." In granting custody of 3-year-old Chifundo "Mercy" James, the court brushed aside concerns by human rights groups that the nation is bending laws meant to protect children in Malawi, where half a million have lost a parent to AIDS.
